Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter–this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.”Matthew 26:34 NLT. Peter had a hard time comprehending that statement. He had just assured the Lord that even if all the others deserted Him Peter would stand firm. He definitely didn’t get the response he expected. In faith Peter had walked on water (though only a few steps). He was with Jesus when He turned bright as the sun and saw Him talking to Moses and Elijah. When Jesus asked Peter Who do you say I am ? He answered “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” How could Jesus possibly think that Peter would deny Him ? When the mob came,Peter drew his sword. The Lord told him to put it up.What happened next would crush Peter. Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said. But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.” He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!” After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.” Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. How many times do we deny
Jesus ? Do we weep ?
